"Patience and manual dexterity are requirements of people who come to work at
the caning studio," say Rhonda Voos, Master Caner at AAC. "The skills of hand
and press cane, rush, Danish rope and basket and wicker repair are learned on
site."
There are nine artisans currently working at AAC. They all like working with
their hands, have shown a willingness to learn, are self-motivated, and are able
to follow directions. Persistence is key to becoming a skilled artisan.
Association of Artisans to Cane performs this intricate and ancient craft at its
studio at 597 East Street, New Haven. This business is designed to give people with disabilities an opportunity to work in a supportive atmosphere, earning an
income while learning the fine traditional craft of chair caning.
As the artist gives new life to a damaged or worn chair, so the challenge to
cane gives new direction and motivation to the artist.
