Children and Youth Services

Area Covered: Statewide

Description: It is the focus of Marrakech’s Children and Youth Services to provide a wide-array of service to most effectively meet the needs of the persons referred. The services are designed by considering the needs of the consumers as well as the needs of families and funding sources. The primary focus of the services is to increase the quality of life for each consumer. Consumers of these services range in age from 5 years to 23 years old. Services include:

Respite

Respite services will be customized to meet the unique needs of each participant, their families, and extended communities. Adequate support will be provided to maintain each participant’s health, safety, and well being while facilitating community access to the greatest extent possible.

Functional Respite Services (Extra Steps Program)

In addition to the Respite services detailed above, Functional Respite is designed to provide individualized behavioral interventions implemented to replace problem behavior with other, socially important, functional behavior. The long-term goal of this program is to ultimately reduce or eliminate behaviors that are of concern, and thereby increase each person’s independence and ability to be maintained in their family environments with the least support possible.

Functional Respite is provided in collaboration with the Connecticut Center of Child Development, Inc. (CCCD) during non-school hours.

Socialization/Recreational Skills Training

Marrakech provides assistance and training to individuals with regard to socialization and recreational skills. Staff works with individuals to reach their maximum potential for community involvement assisting with planning and development, organizational skills, time management, etc. Staff also provides transportation as needed to allow for more opportunities.

Independent Living Skills Training

Marrakech Inc. provides independent living skills training to develop the skills necessary to live in the community with greater independence and choice. These services are provided in combination with other services both at home and in the community setting. Independent living skills training is designed to enhance the person’s ability to manage routine household and personal issues such as cleaning, cooking, and self-care.

Transition Services

Transition Services are provided to special education high school age students and their families as they transition into community-based training programs during the final years of their schooling. Services are designed to assist students to identify interests and preferences; and may include career exploration, job development, community experience/habilitation programs, independent living skills, social skills training, etc.

Pre-Vocational/Vocational Services

This may include: Assessment Services provided to determine the level of competency of an individual in terms of work skills, functional skills, and interpersonal/social skills; Job Seeking Skills Training designed to teach individuals adequate skills to secure individual competitive employment in the community. Job Placement Services provided to individuals who have an interest and a desire to work, who need assistance to identify, secure, and maintain employment in the community. Job Coaching, which includes the provision of a paid individual to assist a person with learning a new job, or new job tasks, and to continue to perform well on the job. Adkins Life Skills Program is a career development series for youth and adults. It uses a multimedia approach to assist participants in discovering their strengths and taking responsibility for their own development and employment.

Community Housing Assistance Program (CHAP)

CHAP is a DCF-funded program that offers community, housing, educational, and employment resources for individuals 17 years of age or older who are committed to DCF. The goal is to assist individuals in fully transitioning to independent living. As part of the CHAP, DCF contracts with Marrakech, Inc, to provide case management services to eligible participants.



Program Locations: Programs take place in the individuals' homes, in the community, and at various Marrakech program sites in areas including Cheshire, New Milford, Waterbury, and New Haven.
