Community Experience
Helping people exercise their right to choose what they wish to experience
PACE: Program Activities and Community Experience
LEAP: Life Enhancement and Achievement Program
BDP: Blended Day Programs
About these programs
The PACE, LEAP, and Blended Day programs are located in West Haven, Cheshire, and New
Milford. The programs provide community experiences for adults with developmental
disabilities for whom employment is not a primary goal. Staff members work with program
participants to maximize independence, choice making, community relationships, and meaningful
community experiences. Some participants do paid work such as facility support services in
commercial and office settings, community employment, or occasional piecework. The programs
each have a special focus.
PACE is geared toward providing a highly integrated community program for individuals with
severe, multiple disabilities. The program staff are trained to provide intensive personal care
and support while promoting community involvement through recreation, volunteerism and some
paid work.
LEAP offers people with disabilities recreation, community involvement, work preparation,
volunteerism, and paid work. The program staff facilitates connections with area businesses,
a radio station, and a local cable network to enhance opportunities for personal development.
The Blended Day Program focuses upon supporting people with autism and/or behavioral
challenges to work and recreate in the community. An intensively staffed program, the persons
served benefit from opportunities for paid work as well as community activities focused upon
the development of personal interests.
Other activities include the use of resources such as local public libraries, public parks,
grocery markets, local merchants, community events, and weekly trips to senior centers for the
older adults. Activities are planned with the goals and objectives of the individuals in mind and
based on the individual's preferences and choices.
