Group Employment

Successful vocational gains through small community-based work crews

About this Program

The goal of the Supported Employment Group (SEG) Program is to maintain successful employment in a community setting for a small group of individuals with similar needs. An Employment Specialist (ES) is on site at all times to serve as the supervisor of the work setting, to act as the liaison with the host company and to ensure the quality of the work being performed. The ES is responsible for assessing the skills and need areas of the individuals in order to assist them in establishing their goals and vocational paths. Additionally, participants will learn skills for work that are marketable should the individual wish to move to a more independent work situation in the future.

Each program participant is assigned an Employment Specialist who is responsible for evaluating the interests, skills, abilities and preferences of the person served. The ES facilitates all job coaching supports and transportation when necessary. Most individuals do not work at competitive levels and are paid sub-minimum wages under a U.S. Department of Labor certificate. The benefits of a work crew setting is that the employee has the opportunity to perform real work, meet and interact with non-staff and receive the level of support they need to maintain employment based on their ability.

The people served in SEG are part of the community at large as well as the Marrakech family, which includes team members, family and friends, and other significant people in their life. "People in SEG are also encouraged to participate in the program's peripheral activities such as the job club, social club, monthly television talk show program and WYBC-AM weekly radio show." The SEG Program recognizes that having a job is an important component in life that promotes positive self-esteem, confidence and personal growth. At the very least, having a job also helps pay the bills and gives each person the dignity and respect of self-sufficiency.
