East Street Arts
East Street Arts is a newly renovated and expanded arts building at 597 East Street in the Upper State Street district of New Haven. East Street Arts is dedicated to fostering the creation of art through artisan training programs, workshops and community interactions for persons of all abilities. The artists benefit from earned income opportunities while they show and sell their work in the attached retail space.
Volunteer opportunities: Volunteers would assist artisans with their work in seat weaving and textile weaving, assist with finishing up the product going into the store by ironing, pricing, etc.
Taking Initiative Center
The Taking Initiative Center is located in New Haven. The program works with people in New Haven who have not been reached by our addiction service system, as well as those who have tried treatment and had been unsuccessful. The Urban Initiative, a unique alliance of networked agencies, seeks to reach these people so that balance and stability may be restored to their lives. The aim of the program is to engage, motivate and support those served so that they can adopt a healthy daily routine, gain employment, and reconnect with lost relationships and opportunities. It is also a place where people can safely talk with their peers, consult with counselors, and just get away from their normal daily routine. Individuals can make use of a free laundry facility, coffee shop, computer classes, recovery groups and extensive literature.
Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteer or volunteer groups are needed to prepare, deliver, and serve a hot meal at 1:00 pm on Sunday afternoons. The meals should feed 22 plus the volunteers that day.
Quality of Life Activities
Marrakech is dedicated to providing opportunities for the people it serves to access recreational and fitness activities, to learn new hobbies or skills, to make friends and to participate fully in community life. To this end, Quality of Life Services staff coordinates a monthly calendar of events filled with fun and learning opportunities.
