Recently, Speaker of the House of Representatives James Amann, D-Milford, toured Marrakech, Inc.’s newest facility located at 450 Island Lane in West Haven. During his visit, Speaker Amann had the opportunity to be introduced to Marrakech’s Community Experience programs: LEAP, a program for those with disabilities offering recreation, community involvement, work and volunteerism, and Blended Day, a program for people with autism and/or other behavioral challenges that engage individuals to work and recreate in the community. In each of the program areas, Speaker Amann met with both consumers and staff, gaining valuable knowledge of Marrakech and its mission. Speaker Amann also had to the chance to meet with Frank McCarthy, executive director, Marrakech, Inc., who gave a presentation urging a fair private sector providers cost of living adjustment (COLA) to be added to this year's State budget. Currently, there is no COLA increase budgeted for 2009. Mr. McCarthy stressed how staff recruitment and retention are adversely affected when salary increases do not take place.
