Academy for Human Service TrainingDescription - The Academy for Human Service Training (AHST)prepares individuals for entry-level careers in the Human Service or Customer Service fields through a combination of classroom and hands-on training. The program provides occupational skills training, assistance with basic education needs, case management, as well as job placement and retention activities. Instructors for this program are typically managers or administrators in the human service field who have participated in Train the Trainer activities to be eligible to teach certification and other specialized course or who have the direct experience and knowledge about the topic being addressed. Follow up services are provided post-graduation for a minimum of 90 days up to 1 full year. Classes are held Monday - Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and generally operate on a 12-week cycle.Geographic area covered - AHST sites are located in New Haven, Bridgeport, and Waterbury, Connecticut. Students may attend from any city or town as long as their local workforce investment board or other funding source approves one of these training locations. Eligibility - To be eligible for the AHST, individuals must attend an information session at one of the three sites, complete an application and onsite interview, meet the basic entry criteria for the program and the third party payer, and have secured funding from a third party payer. The AHST receives special contract funding for Out-of School Youth (ages 18-21) and individuals currently receiving Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) through the area workforce development boards, including Workforce Alliance, Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board, and The WorkPlace, Inc. In addition, tuition may be paid for using an Individual Training Account (ITA) voucher from any One Stop Center in the state, as well as by the Bureau of Rehabilitation Services, Worker's Compensation Commission, Board of Education and Services for the Blind, school boards and others. Each funding source has specific entrance criteria, which is reviewed with each applicant at an information session.
