Volunteer OpportunitiesMarrakech, Inc. founded in 1971, is a private nonprofit charitable organization that serves more than 1,900 children and adults with developmental, physical, and behavioral health disabilities through housing, employment, and community integration services. Marrakech also provides residential, educational, and job placement services to people facing economic challenges. Marrakech Inc. The Association of Artisans to Cane (AAC)Is a transitional work program for adults with mental and physical disabilities. Located at 597 East Street, New Haven AAC specializes in repairing chairs and furniture with hand cane, press cane, rush, splint woven, Danish cord, and Shaker tape seats or backs. We have been in business weaving chair seats for over 17 years in New Haven. AAC employs about 10 individuals on a part-time basis as independent contractors. Through their work on chairs, the artisans learn important job skills with the goal of making the transition into other jobs in the community. Each individual learns the art of seat weaving on a variety of projects. We are a service business where customers bring in their furniture to be repaired. Volunteer opportunities: Volunteers would assist artisans with their work on chairs. Knowledge of chair caning or any seat weaving, or furniture repair/restorations would be useful. Volunteers could also help to find places to sell caned furniture and possibly transport furniture to found sites. This is a very busy work environment employing adults with many different challenges. Patience and ability to multitask would be very helpful. Taking Iniative CenterThe Taking Initiative Center is located in New Haven. The program works with people in New Haven who have not been reached by our addiction service system, as well as those who have tried treatment and had been unsuccessful. The Urban Initiative, a unique alliance of networked agencies, seeks to reach these people so that balance and stability may be restored to their lives. The aim of the program is to engage, motivate and support those served so that they can adopt a healthy daily routine, gain employment, and reconnect with lost relationships and opportunities. It is also a place where people can safely talk with their peers, consult with counselors, and just get away from their normal daily routine. Individuals can make use of a free laundry facility, coffee shop, computer classes, recovery groups and extensive literature. Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteer or volunteer groups are needed to prepare, deliver, and serve a hot meal at 1:00 pm on Sunday afternoons. The meals should feed 22 plus the volunteers that day. Quality of Life ActivitiesMarrakech is dedicated to providing opportunities for the people it serves to access recreational and fitness activities, to learn new hobbies or skills, to make friends and to participate fully in community life. To this end, Quality of Life Services staff coordinates a monthly calendar of events filled with fun and learning opportunities. Groups for Fun and Learning
