Advocacy in Action

SPEAKING UP. Mike Morgan, Program Manager of the Taking Initiative Center testified before the Connecticut General Assembly’s Appropriations Committee on February 23rd to urge them to increase the funding allotted to protect against the devastating impact created by issues facing those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. He also stressed the need to address the debilitating staffing issues confronting nonprofits throughout the State who are unable to pay dedicated employees a living wage. Chronic underfunding has not kept pace with soaring inflation. Marrakech stands in solidarity with numerous nonprofits who consistently bring this critical need to the attention of the Connecticut State Legislature.

NEVER GIVE UP. Heather LaTorra, President & CEO, remains relentless in her efforts to implore the Connecticut General Assembly’s Appropriations Committee to provide yearly cost of living increases to employees who work tirelessly in nonprofit jobs that support vulnerable populations. On March 12th in the eleventh hour, she testified to again present the case of why this increase would benefit employees, nonprofit organizations, and the individuals they serve. To hear Heather’s testimony (11:16:45) and all the testimonies, watch below.

STATING THEIR CASE. Testimony to the Connecticut General Assembly’s Appropriations Committee extended into the wee hours of the morning on February 26th as advocates from countless social service agencies made compelling cases for increased funding to community nonprofits. This included pleas from Mike Morgan, Taking Initiative Center Program Manager (1:43:39); Lisa Jardin, VP of Person-Centered Connections (2:04:55); and Heather LaTorra, President & CEO (9:52:27) who stressed the dire need for the 5% increase and yearly cost of living adjustments to keep pace with soaring inflation and circumvent the devastating impact of chronic underfunding. This funding is critical if nonprofits are to continue providing essential services to those who depend on them.

LET’S RALLY. 100 Marrakech supporters joined 1,800 nonprofit advocates in Hartford on Wednesday, April 24th to demand funding that keeps pace with the rate of inflation at a rally organized by The Alliance: The Voice of Community Nonprofits. A chorus of voices chanting “HEAR US,” reached legislators in the capitol building as speakers and advocates stated their case in support of the State’s most vulnerable population.
