What We Do
Community Companion Home (CCH)
Are you ready to make a difference in someone's life and open your heart and home to an individual with a disability?
Description:
Community Companion Homes promote positive relationships that foster growth and independence in a community setting. In this setting a community member becomes a licensed care provider who opens their home to an individual with a disability.
Community Companion Home Licensees are licensed by the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) and accept the responsibility for caring for one or two adults with a disability in the licensee's own home. The Licensee plays an active role in the individual's team and the collaborative development of a support plan.
The Licensee helps the individual integrate with their family and the community, teaches the individual to use community resources and services, ensures the person's health and medical needs are met and comply with licensing regulations of the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services.
Training is provided, including: abuse & neglect prevention and reporting, CPR, infection control, program development, medical emergency procedures and positive behavioral supports.
A Licensee must go through an initial application process that includes training, showing proof that they are in good health, 3 references, a Local and State Police background check of the applicant and all occupants who live in the home over the age of 16, and a Home Study interview. The applicant's home will also go through a fire safety check. Once the initial process is completed, an application will be filled out and submitted. The licensing division of DDS Central Office will then conduct a survey of the home.
The Licensee receives a monthly payment for each individual living in their home –a flat rate for room & board and a reimbursement for care to the individual based on their level of need.
The matching process allows us to look at similar interests and backgrounds to ensure a compatible match between the Licensee and the individual.
