East Street Arts

In 2016, to provide creative opportunities for artists, Marrakech’s seat weaving/chair caning business, the Association of Artisans to Cane, was expanded to include an art studio and gift shop. The newly renovated social enterprise was renamed East Street Arts.

East Street Arts is dedicated to fostering the creation of art through artisan training programs, workshops, and community interactions for artists with disabilities. The artists develop their skills in daily workshops where each artist’s natural approach and creativity are nurtured to generate an aesthetic that is one-of-a-kind, yet still on trend. Every purchase of an artisan good made at East Street Arts or sale of a caned chair repair directly contributes to the income that the working artisans earn there and helps us provide more art-based employment opportunities for others.

Marrakech, Inc. Community and Employment Services is partnered with East Street Arts and is primarily funded by the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) and referral for services comes through DDS. A private pay option is available for individuals who wish to receive services.

East Street Arts artisans are paired with local artists and designers to learn the process of making artisan goods for sale and/or to learn the art of chair caning and seat weaving. Each artist has an individually designed learning process to increase their skills and work towards creating unique goods that can be sold in our shop and/or to complete chair caning and seat weaving repairs for customers. Products sold in our shop are handpicked by a supervising artist.
